This morning, the Carlton County Board ratified a deal with Enbridge Energy on a new route for the Sandpiper pipeline that had been slated to cross new land in the eastern half of Carlton County. The new route proposal more closely follows existing utility corridors, including power lines and Enbridge’s existing pipeline corridor. This deal is the culmination of a lot of hard work on the part of many landowners along the route as well as our county commissioners and other elected officials, with Commissioner Bob Olean and Representative Mike Sundin deserving special thanks for their efforts to find a solution.
However, an agreement between Enbridge and the County is not the final step in this process. It is very important that our attention now turns to the MN Public Utilities Commission. As the ultimate authority in routing decisions, the PUC needs to hear from us to ensure that the final route minimizes damage and is in the public interest. To that end, the Carlton County Land Stewards is sponsoring a series of letter-writing open houses to help people make their voice heard.
